Vigils have been held across the United States for the murdered right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. His funeral in Arizona will be attended by the president and senior Republicans, with high-level Secret Service security in place. Kirk was a hugely influential yet deeply controversial figure, whose comments often sparked outrage.
Kirk was shot dead on September 10th while speaking at a college campus in Utah.
In death, he remains divisive; Congress has established a national day of remembrance, which dozens of Democrats opposed.
The killing has heightened political tensions, leading to protests, a broadcaster's suspension, and an alleged shooting at a news station.
The nation now wonders if this moment will lead to reconciliation or further violence.
Al Jazeera's Patty Culhane reports from Washington, DC.
