Syria’s ancient city of Palmyra: Concern over security of historic and strategic sites

1 דקות קריאה

Syria’s ancient city of Palmyra, located in modern-day Tadmur, has seen its population drop from 100,000 to under 10,000 due to years of conflict. The town suffered under ISIL, regime forces, and airstrikes from Syrian and Russian aircraft. Tadmur’s strategic location links Damascus to northern cities and lies near oil, gas wells, and key pipelines. The area changed hands between the government, ISIL, and various militias, including Hizbollah. Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham is clearing explosives left by multiple factions, focusing on dangerous remnants like missile tips and buried mines, posing ongoing threats to the population.

Al Jazeera’s Mohamed Vall reports from Tadmur, Syria.
