Panama is facing increasing pressure to build more reservoirs to ensure there is enough water for both the smooth operation of the Panama Canal and for the population’s drinking needs. Recurring droughts have disrupted traffic along the canal—one of the world's most crucial trade routes—causing long and expensive delays in the passage of vessels between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
