Tamara Alrifai says the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) is calling for “a surge” in humanitarian assistance to the Gaza Strip, including food, tents, medicine and hygiene kits. It must be “an actual surge and not a trickle”, al-Rifai told Al Jazeera from Amman, Jordan, acknowledging that it will take a lot of work to restore a sense of dignity and normality for Palestinians in the enclave. “It is a moment of hope, both for an immediate respite for those who have survived, who have not been killed, in Gaza,” she said of the ceasefire deal. “But it’s also a moment of immense anticipation once we – the humanitarian organisations – are able to truly realise the scope and the scale of the destruction and of the work that lies ahead.”
