Madagascar education crisis: Poverty keeps over a million children out of school

1 דקות קריאה

In Madagascar, a severe education crisis is trapped in a cycle of deep poverty.
UN data shows over a million children are out of school, with only a third completing high school.
The national university enrolment rate is just 6%.
Schools are chronically overcrowded and under-resourced, with nearly all 10-year-olds unable to read a simple text.
This widespread lack of opportunity recently fuelled youth-led anti-government protests, which contributed to a military coup.
The situation ensures the crisis will impact generations to come.

Al Jazeera’s Fahmida Miller reports from the capital Antananarivo.
