The prime minister announced the NHS app would give patients greater choice and control over their treatment. He said the overhaul would focus on making appointments available in the community rather than at hospital and preventing unnecessary referrals. He expected that giving the choice to patients over non-essential follow-up appointments would free up about 1m appointments a year for those who need them
