Israel's starvation of Gaza fulfils UN genocide definition: Holocaust scholar

In an Al Jazeera interview, Omer Bartov, Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Brown University, stated Israel’s starvation campaign in Gaza meets the UN Genocide Convention’s definition of "deliberately inflicting conditions to destroy a group". He cited ICC arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant over weaponising hunger, noting Gaza is now being "flattened into uninhabitability" rather than being a warzone. Drawing parallels to Nazi Germany’s siege of Leningrad, Bartov emphasised starvation’s historical use in genocide, though he stressed Gaza’s crisis could be immediately alleviated if the US permitted aid entry. He warned of Israel’s explicit settler-colonial ambitions, quoting a minister’s vow to make Gaza "Jewish", while lamenting global inaction despite mounting war crimes. Bartov predicted Israel’s apartheid system would ultimately collapse but expressed pessimism about Palestinian survival under current ethnic cleansing in Gaza and the West Bank. He concluded that while global public opinion is shifting, political elites still enable Israel’s genocide, leaving Palestinian national continuity in grave peril.
