Global carmakers reacted with shock as the US announced blanket tariffs on vehicle imports, causing share prices to tumble in markets from Seoul to Frankfurt. ING economist Carsten Brzeski warned the move would further weaken Europe's struggling car industry. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called it a "direct attack" on his country’s auto sector and vowed to defend it. Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba questioned whether all nations should be treated the same, given Japan’s investment in the US. Brazil’s President Lula criticised the tariffs as a threat to free trade. China, seen as a key target, warned that trade wars have no winners. Countries across Asia, Europe, and Latin America now find themselves caught in the escalating dispute.
