Supporters of the French mass rape victim Gisele Pelicot cheered as Dominique Pelicot was sentenced to 20 years in prison by a court in Avignon on Thursday.

Pelicot, 72, pleaded guilty during the three-month trial and apologised to his family. He also said that all the strangers he invited into his house knew his now ex-wife was unaware of what was happening to her. The trial has attracted worldwide attention and turned into an examination of the pervasiveness of *ual violence in France and beyond. Gisele Pelicot, 71, could have demanded a closed-door trial but asked for it be held in public, saying she hoped it would help other women speak up and show that victims had nothing to be ashamed of
